Le plat pays

Le plat pays (Eng. The flat land ) is a French chanson singer Jacques Brel the Belgian from the year 1962. Entitled Mijn vlakke country (Eng. My flat land ) Brel sang it in Dutch.

The song is Brel tribute to his Belgian home of West Flanders. He describes the barren, windswept, sometimes bleak landscape appears. Because of this landscape type will continue in parts of the Netherlands, the Dutch version of the songs in the neighboring country is very popular.

The French text is written by Brel himself, the Dutch version is by Ernst van Altena. As inspiration Brel was the poem " La Venoge " of the Swiss writer Jean Villard (called " Gilles " ), in which he describes the river course of the Venoge in the canton of Vaud.
