Le Spectre de la Rose

Le Spectre de la Rose (French The Spirit of the Rose) is a choreographed by Michel Fokine for the Ballets Russes ballet in one act with music by Carl Maria von Weber and the libretto by Jean -Louis Vaudoyer.

Action

A debutante returns with a rose from the ball back home tired and falls asleep in an armchair. The rose falls to the ground. In the dream the girl the spirit of the rose appears. He jumps through the window in her room and the two dance together. After the spirit has fled again, this girl wakes up.

History

Michel Fokine's choreography is based on a choreographic poem by Théophile Gautier. As a music Fokine Carl Maria von Weber's Invitation to the Dance chose op 65 ( J 260), sets and costumes by Léon Bakst. The premiere of the play took place in the theater of Monte Carlo on April 19, 1911. At the premiere Tamara Karsavina and Vaslav Nijinsky danced the main roles. The grace and elegance of Nijinsky's jumping through the window is often emphasized by the critics and is considered to be achieved by any other artist of the role.
