Le Tampon

Le Tampon is a municipality of the French Overseas Departments of Réunion with 74 998 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011).

Geography

Le Tampon is located about south of the center of the island and is one of the few municipalities that have no access to the coast. It lies on the slope of the central level " Pleine des Cafres " down to the coast at Saint- Pierre. The settlement structure is rather scattered, especially along the road to the north of Réunion. Many districts are named simply with atomic numbers, according to their Kilometerentferung of Saint- Pierre, such as Le onzième (the " Eleventh " ) or Le Vingt- Troisième ( " the Twenty-third ").

History

The South of Reunion Island has been inhabited since the 18th century. On the slopes of the perfume plant vetiver and ylang -ylang were grown initially mainly. As an independent municipality Le Tampon in 1925 from the town of Saint -Pierre was outsourced.

Culture and sights

With the Maison du Volcan (House of the volcano ) located in the town one of the most visited museums in the island, which deals with volcanism in general and particularly with the Piton de la Fournaise.

From Le Tampon from also, the road towards the volcano with its hiking trails to the different calderas and craters.

Economy and infrastructure

The community depends mainly on tourism, especially by visitors to the volcano. Also play in agriculture continue the cultivation of sugar cane and livestock play a role.
