Lecanora saxicola

Lecanora is a genus of lichens.

Features

The camp ( thallus ) is white to greenish gray, sometimes slightly yellowish, crust- shaped and sometimes has clearly lobed edges. The apothecia are lecanoroid, the spores unseptiert and colorless. The formerly very extensive genus Lecanora used to contain species that have now been spun off into their own genera, such as Aspicilia, Rhizoplaca and Squamarina.

The species are divided into two sections:

  • Eulecanora with completely crust- like bearing and
  • Placodium with more or less pronounced side lobes

Ecology and distribution

Lichen of the genus Lecanora are mostly found in rock, such as walls, building walls and walkways, some species but also on tree bark or wood. You can grow one to several millimeters per year, and they propagate radially. By the death of the older center to form rings out. So they can often several decades, partly some centuries old.

The genus is distributed almost worldwide and can also be found in the polar regions.
