Lechaio

Lechaion (Greek Λέχαιον ) was one of the most ancient ports, located in the city of Corinth on the Gulf of Corinth in the Peloponnese (Greece).

Since the Corinth Canal did not exist in ancient times, the ships were unloaded in Lechaion, dragged across the Diolkos and loaded in Cenchreae the Saronic Gulf again, using the same in the reverse direction was going on. The harbor was since the 7th century BC in operation and was connected by a road to Corinth, whose monumental early in today's excavation of the city is still visible, as well as by long walls. Still 355 AD, the port was expanded, today it is sanded. Visible today are mainly the remains of the largest basilica in Greece (224 m long), which was built circa 450 AD under Emperor Markianos and 551 destroyed by an earthquake.
