Lecsó

Letcho (Hungarian Lecsó, Czech and Slovakian Leco, Polish Leczo ) is a stew of Hungarian cuisine, which basically consists of bacon, yellow pointed peppers, tomatoes and onions.

Green peppers would be too bitter and too sweet red peppers, and is therefore not used for a letcho usually in Hungarian cuisine.

Letcho in Hungary is a main meal, not a side dish, so it is sometimes with Egg barley ( tarhonya ) prepared. It can also be added Lecsókolbász ( a Hungarian sausage ), bacon, wine and rice.

The dish is very popular in East Germany as a side dish with grilled meats, sausages and other meat dishes. There have supermarkets and grocery stores of various varieties letcho in the glass, but the Letschos available in canned strongly deviate from the original. In other parts of Germany it is not very common. Letcho is also an important part of Austrian cuisine.

A similar dish, which is also based on peppers, is the Italian Peperonata, but containing no fat, is mild flavored and cooked shorter.
