Ledra Palace Hotel

The Ledra Palace Hotel (Greek: Ληδρα Παλας ) is a hotel building in Nicosia, Cyprus, until the Turkish invasion in 1974, it was considered most luxurious hotel on the island, since it use the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus

History

The architect Ginsberg built a total of four buildings in Cyprus, the Forest Park Hotel and the Hahollades House in Larnaca, the house No. 311 in the October 28th Street and the Ledra Palace Hotel, from 1949 at the former King Edward VII Street ( later Markos Drakos Avenue). Formally, it picks the one hand, forms of Cypriot Gothic on the other hand, there are also Venetian shapes in the facade.

It was next to the Hilton Nicosia and the Forest Park Hotel in Larnaca at those three hotels, the first installed in 1966 a swimming pool in Cyprus. Among the guests of the hotel included Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor.

1967 to 1968 it was renovated and expanded in 1974 it was forced to close after the United Nations declared the property of the hotel to the buffer zone. The United Nations lined up in the building a their headquarters. The building is now on significant backlog of renovation.

The building was known as a meeting place of the leaders of the Greek and Turkish communities.
