Leeward Antilles

The Leeward Islands (Dutch Benedenwindse islands, Spanish Islas de Sotavento, Eng. Leeward Antilles ) are an archipelago off the northern coast of South America to the Caribbean and the southern part of the Lesser Antilles. They are not under the influence of the northeast trade winds as the Leeward Islands, and therefore have a much drier climate. The English language called the islands as " Leeward Antilles", in contrast to the " Leeward Islands " which are part of the Leeward Islands.

The islands cover an area of 2,400 km ², most of the approximately 670,000 people live in Aruba, Curacao and Margarita.

The islands of Margarita, Coche and Cubagua make up the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta. The so-called " ABC islands " (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The other islands include the Aves Island to the 600 islands of the Dependencias Federales ( "Dependent Federal Areas" ) in Venezuela.
