Lefortovo Prison

The Lefortovo Prison is a prison in Lefortovsky district in Moscow.

It was founded in 1881 and in 2005 was placed under the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation. In the Soviet Union it served as a detention center and was operated by the secret service.

From 1953, the year of Stalin, among others, the following famous people were imprisoned in Lefortovo:

  • Gleb Yakunin, a dissident priest
  • Eduard Limonov, writer and politician
  • Alexander Podrabinek, human rights activist
  • Mathias Rust, German private pilot
  • Natan Sharansky, Soviet dissident and Israeli politician
