Left-Green Movement

The Left-Green Movement ( Isl Vinstrihreyfingin - grænt framboð, dt literally left movement - Green candidacy ) is a political party in Iceland.

History

The party was founded in 1999 when some members of the Icelandic parliament Althingi did not agree with the merger of several left-wing parties to the alliance. They split off and formed the movement.

In the parliamentary elections of 2007, the party won a significant increase in votes compared to the last election and was 14.3 percent of the vote. With 9 seats in Parliament she was thus the strongest opposition party. Following the resignation of the government of Geir Haarde she stepped into a minority government with the Alliance under a Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir. After the early parliamentary election in April 2009, the party formed a coalition with the Alliance; she asked four ministers in the government Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir II In the parliamentary elections of 2013, the Left-Green Movement suffered heavy losses and is since then in opposition.

Political positions

The focus of the party are environmental protection, social affairs and equality. In addition, the party wants to strengthen direct democracy in Iceland. One of Iceland 's accession to the European Union rejects the party, it is also against the commitment in NATO.

Chairman

Steingrímur J. Sigfússon was chairman from 1999 to 2013. Since February 2013 Katrín Jakobsdóttir is chairman of the party.
