After his intended marriage failed with the Princess Carolyne zu Sayn -Wittgenstein on the opposition of her family, he decided to remain still in Rome and devoted himself increasingly to composition with religious themes and sacred works. His sacred works are evidence of his efforts to implement a since 1834 dreamed of him under the influence of the Abbé de Lamennais " musique humanitaire ".

In 1865, he underwent the tonsure, received the four minor orders (which are not connected to the celibacy ) and could henceforth call " Abbé ". He himself wrote in a letter: " My penchant for Catholicism stems from my childhood days and has become an enduring and dominant feeling me. " During this period he created his two " Francis " legends.
