Léman (department)

Léman was originally a French department, with its capital Geneva.

It was built in 1798 for the following field components:

  • The territory of the Republic annexed by France Geneva,
  • The Pays de Gex in the département of Ain,
  • The northern part of the department of Mont- Blanc ( Bonneville, Cluses, Thonon -les- Bains )
  • From 1800 also with the Mont Blanc massif, the cantons Chamonix, Saint- Gervais Saint- Gervais- les- Bains, Megève, Flumet and Sallanches.

Since 1800, the department was divided into three arrondissements:

  • Geneva
  • Bonneville,
  • Thonon.

Geneva gained its independence in 1813 (enlarged to six communes of the Pays de Gex ) again, since 1814 as a member of the Confederation.
