Lemovii

The Lemovier are mentioned by Tacitus in Germania along with the Rugiern as neighbors of the Goths. Some manuscripts of the Germania is taken from the spelling Lemonier. Both tribes would be characterized by round shields, short swords, and obedience to their kings.

Due to this feature the Lemovier for the time around 100 AD are geographically in the southern Baltic coast locates in the area between the Oder and Vistula. In other sources, the Lemovier are not mentioned under this name. Therefore, an equation was considered with the Turcilingi that occur at the same time with the Rugiern in ancient sources; speaks against that Alans origin of this name is more likely.

In addition to other identification tests, the view appears that the Lemovier were identical with the Glommas mentioned in Widsith, most sustainable. On the one here on dive Rugians ( Holmrygas = island or sea Rugians ) and on the other hand, both terms have the same meaning, namely the Bellenden.

Verse 20 of Widsith

Casere weold Creacum ond Cælic Finnum, Hagena Holmrygum ond Heoden Glommum. Witta weold Swæfum, Wada Hælsingum, Meaca Myrgingum, Mearchealf Hundingum. þeodric weold Froncum, Thyle Rondingum, = Hagen rules the Inselrugier and Heoden on the Glommas

Verse 65 of Widsith

Ond mid Burgendum, Thaer ic beag geþah; me Thaer Guðhere forgeaf glædlicne maþþum songes to leane. Naes þæt Saene cyning! Mid Froncum ic wæs ond mid Frysum ond mid Frumtingum. Mid Rugum ic wæs ond mid Glommum ond mid Rumwalum. = I was at the Rugiern and Glommas and the Romans

Also in the Germanic heroic saga can find correspondences. The King Ethel / Hethin kidnapped Hilda, the daughter of King Hagen, what displeases and this leads to a fight on the island Hiddensee.

Whether the Lemovier among the Elbgermanen or are attributable to the East Germans, is unclear. For an originally Scandinavian origin of the Glomma in southeast Norway could serve.

In archaeological terms the Oxhöft culture is associated with parts of the Rugians and Lemovier. The same applies to the Plöwener group of Uecker-Randow region. and the Dębczyno Group
