Len Murray

Lionel " Len " Murray, Baron Murray of Epping Forest ( born August 2, 1922 in Hadley, Shropshire, England; † 20 May 2004, London ) was a British officer of the Trades Union Congress (TUC ), the umbrella organization of trade unions, as well as Labour Party politician.

Life

Murray began his career in 1947 as assistant in the economics department of the Trades Union Congress, in 1954 before he became head of this department. In 1969 he was elected Deputy General Secretary of the TUC.

On September 7, 1973, he was finally finally elected to succeed Victor Feather himself as Secretary-General of the Federation and held this post until his untimely resignation exactly eleven years to 7 September 1984. During an interview he summarized his task as follows:

He led the Trades Union Congress during the height of the power of the umbrella organization the mid-1970s and thus played a central role in the negotiation of the so-called Social Pact ( Social Contract ) with the then Labour Government. Recently lost the governing body after the inauguration of the Conservative government under Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1979 increasing influence as well as to membership. Successor as general secretary of the TUC was born on September 7, 1984 Norman Willis.

In 1985, he was raised as a life peer with the title Baron Murray of Epping Forest to the peerage and thus belonged to his death the House of Lords (House of Lords) as a member of the Labour Party.
