Lend (Graz)

Lend is the 4th district of Graz. It is located west of downtown, on the right bank of the Mur. In the north it extends to Calvary.

History

The northern part of the old Murvorstadt ( this is the part of the old city, which lies on the right bank of the Mur ) is the center of the district. From the 17th century the north-south main connection (Vienna -Graz -Trieste or Ljubljana ) performs the Wiener Straße and the Lend Square. It had among other things an active development in the field of facilities result. From this period also the millstones, a small side channel of Mur, who moved here many commercial establishments. Furthermore, there was recovery from 1844, when the Anne Street was built as the new main train station. Around the station, numerous iron processing plants settled. The district has long been regarded as a classic working-class district. In the course of the Graz Capital of Culture 2003 and the construction of the Kunsthaus Graz is an urban scene developed around the Lend Square, which is the heart of this district, and the Mariahilferplatz.

Traffic

  • To the west of the district is the main train station, which is the central hub for public transport. From here the railway lines spread to the north ( Bruck an der Mur, Vienna, Linz, Salzburg and Villach), east ( to Aspangbahn ), South ( state border, Marburg, Ljubljana ) and in the Western Styria ( Voitsberg, Germany Berg). On the square in several tram and bus lines have their starting point ( see also Graz).
  • The main thoroughfare from north to south led earlier on Wiener Straße and the Lend Square; today it has shifted further to the west of the railway station belt. But also on the Lend Square continues there is a small bus station for regional bus routes in the Western Styria. In addition, the GVB bus routes intersect there 40 and 67 ( from north to south ) and the lines 58 and 63 ( from east to west ).
  • Since the completion of Unterflurtrasse on the B 67b ( grave belt ) a connection exists to the grave road to the east (district Geidorf )

Culture and sights

The stadteinwärtige southern part of the district is a UNESCO World Heritage City of Graz - Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg.
