Lengwitz

The Lengwitz is one of the three headwaters of the Ilm in the Thuringian Forest in Ilmenau. It is about five miles long.

Course

The Lengwitz rises at the Rennsteig in Allzunah and then flows in a northerly direction through the Gläsertal. Here she takes from the right Häder and below on the left of the mill mass Göpfersbach. From the mass mill in addition to road Allzunah - Stuetzerbach the Rennsteigbahn leads along the valley of the Lengwitz. It follows a valley widening the Lengwitz in which developed the village Stuetzerbach. Not far below the village itself Lengwitz, free stream and Taubach unite to Ilm.

Conceptual history

The name comes from the Slavic Lengwitz and was probably the original name of the entire Ilm. Here the Längwitzgau stretched from the Rennsteig until after crane field. Because today still remember different names such as a former suburb of Arnstadt on the road to Längwitzgau, which was also referred to as Längwitz.

More

By 1945, the Lengwitz formed the border between Prussia and Saxe-Weimar -Eisenach and the State of Thuringia. That is why the village Stuetzerbach was divided until 1945 along the river on two states. The eastern, side of Weimar was the western Prussian side opposite.
