Leo II (emperor)

Leo II (Greek Λέων Β ', * August / September 467; † November 474) was a short time ( 474) Byzantine emperor.

Leo was the son of Zeno and Ariadne ( daughter of Leo I and Verinas ). After the elimination of Patricius he was elevated as the next male relative of Leo I. in October 472 to Caesar and heir. A year later, probably on 17 November 473, the boy became a co-emperor Augustus.

After the death of his grandfather on 18 January 474, the young Leo took over nominally the autocracy, but already on 29 January, his father Zeno was crowned by him as co-emperor. Leo died in November 474 after a ten-month reign to an unknown illness, leaving Zenon as sole ruler in the East.
