Leo Lionni

Leo Lionni ( born May 5, 1910 in Amsterdam, † October 11, 1999 in Radda in Chianti ) was an Italian graphic artist, painter and writer.

Life

Leo Lionni was born the son of a Jewish diamond cutter and a singer in Amsterdam. As a boy, he was enthusiastic about painting and copied already as a 10 - year-old in the museums of the old masters. In 1922 his parents moved with him to the U.S. and still covered then in various other countries, so that he already spoke five languages ​​at age 14.

In 1925 she came to Italy where Leo studied at his father's request in Genoa economy and in 1935 received his doctorate with a thesis on the diamond trade. During his studies, he has worked as a graphic artist and painter and joined the art movement of Futurism. In 1939 Lionni in the United States and worked as an art director for various magazines, where his " Italian style " caused a sensation. In 1945 he became an American citizen.

1962 Lionni returned back to Italy, although he very well deserved as an art director at Fortune magazine in New York, and has since worked as a freelance artist. In 1959 with Little Blue and littleyellowjacket his first children's book.

The last years before his death lived ill with Parkinson Lionni especially in his home on the Gulf of Genoa and in his apartment in New York. He died at the age of 89 years.
