Léon Bakst

Léon Bakst (Russian Лев Самойлович Бакст, Lew Samoilowitsch Bakst, originally Лейб - Хаим Израилевич Розенберг / body - Izrailevich Chaim Rosenberg; * 27 Apriljul / May 9 1866greg in Grodno, .. † December 27, 1924 in Paris) was a Russian - French painter and stage designer.

Life

Bakst began in 1883 to study art at the Imperial Russian Academy of his native town, which he, however, leaves prematurely because of an argument over one of his Madonnas. 1893 leaves Bakst Russia and moved to Paris, where he is taught by a Finnish painter.

There he meets a group of young artists by Alexander Benua, Sergei Diaghilev and Valentin Serov know who set up together in 1898, the magazine " Mir Iskusstwa " ( the art world ).

Although Bakst was always inspired on his trips to new, he was tired of his painting and he turned to the illustration of the magazine as well as the colorful, oriental -inspired costume design and stage decoration to as for Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes ".
