Léon Frédéric

Léon Frédéric ( born August 26, 1856 in Brussels, † 27 January 1940 in Schaerbeek ) was a Belgian painter of symbolism.

Biography

The son of a wealthy jeweler Frédéric 1874 enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown. He was a pupil of Jean -François Portaels '. Through him he received a strong influence of the Flemish Baroque painting. Also Italian influences from this period can be seen in his works. From 1876 to 1878, Frédéric was in Italy. He lived mainly in the cities of Rome, Florence, Naples and Venice and met in Italy on the Belgian sculptor Julien Dillens, who also coined Frédéric's later works decisive.
