Léon Hégélé

Léon Hegele ( born January 30, 1925 in Montreux- Vieux, † February 11, 2014 in Sierentz ) was Auxiliary Bishop of Strasbourg.

Life

Léon Hegele 1943 to Reichsarbeitsdienst committed from the beginning in 1944 the German Army to the Eastern Front; there he could desert during the retreat of the German troops in Poland on April 1, 1945. He was taken prisoner and was released on 11 June 1945.

In October 1945 he entered the seminary in Strasbourg and studied philosophy and theology at the Theological Faculty of Strasbourg. He received on 8 April 1950, and was ordained priest in the Archdiocese of Strasbourg operate; first in Staffelfelden in the heart of potash mines. In 1953 he became pastor in Mulhouse, 1955 in Riedisheim. In 1961, he joined the school chaplaincy in Mulhouse. In 1965 he became pastor of Geispitzen and took over at the same time in the diocesan curia different tasks. 1972 he was appointed Episcopal Vicar of southern Alsace.

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop on 9 September 1985 in Strasbourg and Titular Bishop of Utica. The Archbishop of Strasbourg Charles Amarin Brand gave him on 10 November 1985 at the Strasbourg Cathedral, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Léon- Arthur -Auguste Elchinger, retired bishop of Strasbourg, and Joseph Candolfi, Auxiliary Bishop of Basel.

On 18 December 2000, Pope John Paul II accepted his resignation age-related. He lived until 2013 in Geispitzen, after a stroke in a nursing home in Sierentz.
