Leonard Darwin

Major Leonard Darwin ( born January 15, 1850 Down House in Downe, † March 26, 1943 in London) was a British soldier, politician, economist, eugenicist and mentor of Ronald Aylmer Fisher.

Biography

Leonard Darwin was the fourth son of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) and his wife Emma Wedgwood ( 1808-1896 ). From his parents he was sent in 1862 to the Clapham School and since 1871 he went to the Royal Military School of Engineering. Between 1877 and 1882 he worked for the War Department. Leonard Darwin also participated in several scientific expeditions, including the transit of Venus in 1874 and 1882. From 1892 to 1895 he was Member of Parliament of the party Liberal Unionists for the District of Lichfield in Staffordshire.

Leonard Darwin was married twice, first marriage (1882 ) with Elizabeth Frances Fraser († 1898) and his second wife, his cousin ( first degree) Charlotte Mildred Massingberd ( 1868-1940 ). Both marriages were childless.
