Leonel Mário d'Alva

Leonel Mário d' Alva ( born 1935 ) was Prime Minister from 1974 to 1975 in São Tomé and Príncipe.

Political career

He co-founded the independence movement CLSTP, which was renamed in Movimento de São Tomé e Príncipe de Libertação ( MLSTP ) 1972. The movement fought for the independence of the archipelago of Portugal. After the Carnation Revolution in negotiations between Portugal and the MLSTP took place. He was born on December 21, 1974 Prime Minister of the transitional government set up by Portugal and retained the office until the independence of the country on 12 July 1975. Afterwards he was foreign minister until 1978.

In the following years it was within the MLSTP to tensions and d' Alva went into exile in 1982 to Cape Verde. After the introduction of democracy, he returned in 1990 and became president of the party PCD -GR, which became a rallying MLSTP former politician and independent forces. In the first free elections on 20 January 1991, the PCD -GR won an absolute majority, and he was President of the Parliament. The party lost its position as the largest party but already at the next election in October 1994.
