Leonhard Reichartinger

Leonhard Reichartinger († September 25, 1396 at Nicopolis also Linhart Reichhartinger ) was a crusader of Bavarian nobility, who came from the vicinity of consolation mountain. The little that is known about him is narrated by his squire John Schiltberger.

Reichartinger participated in one of the last great crusades of the Middle Ages, which was led by King Sigismund of Hungary. This ended in 1396 at the Battle of Nicopolis in a crushing defeat by the Ottoman army led by Sultan Bayezid I.

In the battle numerous crusade participants were killed, among them Reichartinger. John Schiltberger had come to his aid after he was shot from his horse. Schiltberger describes how he set him on his horse, and as he himself escaped on a Turkish horse. As the fleeing Crusaders tried the same evening to reach the ships on the Danube, Reichartinger came alongside many other lives. Schiltberger fell into a 30 -year captivity.
