Léonie Geisendorf

Léonie Geisendorf born Kaplan ( born April 8, 1914 in Warsaw, Poland ) is a designer who has the longest of her life in Sweden lived and worked.

Life

Léonie Geisendorf received her training at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and then practiced at the renowned architect Le Corbusier, who was her Inspirateur and teacher. When she came to Sweden in 1938, she has worked among others in the architectural firm of Swedish consumer cooperative ( Kooperativa Förbundet ) and Paul Hedqvist. In 1950, she launched her own office in Stockholm, together with her ​​husband Charles -Edouard Geisendorf ( 1913-1985 ), who had come to Sweden during the Second World War from Switzerland. One of her early work was the row of terraced houses Riksrådsvägen in Stockholm, which they had designed together with her husband during the years 1953-1956. The architecture of this row house shows clear influence of Le Corbusier.

In 1965 she formed together with the architect Ralph Erskine and Anders Tengbom the so-called EGT Group, which participated among others in the architectural competitions as part of the reorganization of the Stockholm City ( Norrmalmsregleringen ) and a much-discussed alternative proposal submitted, but this was not realized. Other works include the student house Fyrtalet of 1966 and the S: t Göran's High School of 1961, which is built in untreated concrete and designed in the Brutalist style.

Since 1995, Léonie Geisendorf an honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Architecture at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In 2003 she received the Prince Eugen Medal.
