Léonie Sonning Music Prize

The Léonie Sonning Music Prize (Danish: Léonie Sonnings musikpris ) is an international music prize, which was donated in 1965 by the Danish Léonie Sonning Music Foundation ( Léonie Sonnings music fond ). The award for a life's work is awarded annually to internationally renowned composers, musicians, conductors and singers who are among the best in their field. A reference to Denmark is desirable but not necessary. The music prize is worth 600,000 kroner ( 80,000 euros ).

Background

Léonie Sonning (1894-1970), widow of the Danish author Carl Johan Sonning, 1965, the Foundation gave three possessions, income generated from their feed, the doping and the scholarships. The award ceremony takes place usually in Copenhagen at a concert of the prize winner. Back in 1959, before the official foundation of the price, Igor Stravinsky was awarded the Sonning Music Prize.

The Léonie Sonning Music Foundation also promotes the development of young Scandinavian musicians through scholarships.

The Léonie Sonning Music Prize should not be confused with the Sonning Prize from the Sonning Foundation Carl Johan Sonnings (1879-1937), distinguished the culturally significant personalities or cultural non-profit projects and support.
