Léopold Gernaey

Léopold Gernaey (1955 )

Léopold "pole" Andries Gernaey (* February 25, 1927 in Gistel, Belgium; † 4 August 2005) was a Belgian football goalkeeper.

Career

"Pole" Gernaey began his career at the age of 16 years at his hometown club KEG Gistel. In 1947 he moved to AS Ostend, where he played until 1958. From 1958 to 1961 Gernaey was active for Beerschot VAC.

From 1953 to 1957 Gernaey completed 17 matches in goal for the Belgian national team. He participated in the Soccer World Cup in 1954 partly in Switzerland, where he was employed in both games of the Belgians against England ( 4:4 aet) and Italy ( 1:4).
