Leopold IV, Duke of Anhalt

Friedrich Leopold IV, Duke of Anhalt- Dessau, ( born October 1, 1794 in Dessau, † May 22, 1871 ) was a German ruler of the house of Ascanians.

Life

He was a son of Hereditary Prince Frederick von Anhalt- Dessau and grandson of Duke Leopold III .. After the battle of Leipzig he followed the allies to Paris. He took over on August 9, 1817 after the death of his grandfather, the government of Anhalt- Dessau.

Through the storms of 1848 he was obliged to give the country on October 29, 1848 a constitution, which, however, was already canceled on November 4, 1849, replaced by a new landscape -order until October 1859.

After the extinction of the line of Anhalt- Köthen ( 1847) took over as senior Leopold of Anhalt house on 23 November 1847, the government of Anhalt- Köthen. On 1 May 1853, the two duchies Dessau and Köthen were united to the Duchy of Anhalt- Dessau- Köthen. With the death of Duke Carl Alexander of Anhalt- Bernburg († August 19, 1863 ), he also inherited Anhalt- Bernburg. From 30 August 1863, he held the title of Duke of Anhalt.
