The Kaçanik Gorge

The Lepenac ( Serbian Cyrillic Лепенац, Lepenci Albanian, Macedonian Lepenec / Лепенец ) is a river in the south of Kosovo and northern Macedonia. He is a left tributary of the Vardar with around 75 kilometers in length.

The Lepenac springs east of the city Prizren in Kodža Balkan Mountains at an altitude of 1820 m. First, it flows eastward into the area of ​​Sirinic between the south-eastern slopes of the Žar Mountains and the northwestern slopes of the Šar Planina. From the latter he is fed by many small streams. Next the Lepenac flows through the ski area Brezovica after Štrpce. After that, the river continues to the Kosovo Field, where he but south of the town Sopotnica makes a bend to the south and the Blackbird leaves the field again.

Kaçanik Gorge to Skopje level

In the aftermath of Lepenac flows around the city Kaçanik in the West, before it enters the Kaçanik Gorge. The gorge is the narrowest part of the river valley and is located east of Šar Planina and west of the Crna Gora Skopska. It connects the Blackbird field with the level of Skopje. The gorge is a total of 23 kilometers long and consists of limestone and shale. The places Pustenik and Han i Elezit are the Kaçanik Gorge.

After Han i Elezit the Lepenac is a border between Kosovo and Macedonia before it leaves the gorge near the village Seçishta and flows 60 kilometers from Kosovo.

For the remaining 15 kilometers of the Lepenac flows through the plane of Skopje, which is part of the Vardar valley. After he enters the plane, he is on the left side fed by several small streams from the mountains Crna Gora Skopska. The Lepenac has no major settlements along its Macedonian history before he reached the suburbs of Skopje, Bardovci and Novo Selo. In the borough Gjorce Petrov it opens at an altitude of 262 m in the Vardar.

The Lepenac belongs to the catchment area of ​​the Aegean Sea. Its catchment area is 770 square kilometers, 695 square kilometers located in Kosovo and 75 square miles in Macedonia. He is not navigable.

The Kaçanik Gorge is an important link between Kosovo and Macedonia along the route from Kraljevo in Serbia on Pristina to Skopje.
