Lepilaena australis

Lepilaena is a cosmopolitan genus immersed ( submerged ) of living plants from the family of pondweed plants.

Features

The species are submerged aquatic plants that are annual and relatively short-lived perennial. They have slender rhizomes. The stems are highly branched and particularly in the flow of water up to a meter long.

The leaves are alternate or nearly opposite, have only one vascular bundle, are less than a millimeter wide and have a geöhrte or ligulaähnliche leaf sheath.

The flowers are unisexual usually, the plants can be powered on or dioecious. The flowers are axillary, individually or in groups. The male flower has a reduced perianth of three scales, the female flower has three membranous perianth - segments and three free carpels.

Dissemination

The genus is widespread in inland waters worldwide.
