Leptotila

White-fronted Dove ( Leptotila verreauxi )

Sound swing pigeons ( Leptotila ) are a genus of pigeons birds. It includes eleven species whose distribution extends from northern Mexico to Bolivia and Uruguay.

Appearance

Sound swing pigeons reach a body length of 25-31 centimeters. Thus they correspond to the height of a turtle dove to that of a smaller city pigeon. Characteristic of the style are long and featherless legs. There are ground-dwelling species whose plumage is mostly gray to brown. All have in common is a red-brown coat and red-brown underwings. The tail is short in proportion to body size and has ten feathers on. Apart from the two middle tail feathers, all have a white tip. Flying up sound swing pigeons produce a whirring noise of the model as an instrumental sound. This sound is similar to the flight noise of the partridge and is eponymous for the species. It is generated by the last third narrowed outermost flight feather.

Behavior

The food spectrum of sound swing pigeons consists mostly of berries and seeds. The full clutch has all kinds on two eggs. The shell color is cream to white. Characteristic of this genus pigeons are fast acting and nervous movements of the head and the tail.

Stock

Most types of sound swing pigeons are classified by the IUCN as safely. However, the Grenadataube is considered an endangered Art The stock is estimated to be only 70 to 120 individuals. The population is fragmented by habitat loss as well. Currently, there are conservation efforts for the species that aim that occur in the wild at least 600 individuals in self-sustaining subpopulations.

The Tolimataube that occurs in the central Andes in Colombia at altitudes between 1,800 meters and 2,500 meters, is classified by the IUCN as endangered. The range of this species is very small and is also subject to human interventions, which lead to habitat fragmentation. The brown dove back and the yellow-bellied dove are considered endangered.
