The Learned Ladies (Original Title: Les Femmes savantes ) is a comedy by the French poet Molière. The satirical comedy was first performed in 1672 on the stage of the Palais Royal in Paris.

Action

Clitandre, a distinguished young man is in love with Henriette, a daughter from a good family. Her father Chrysale, who would agree to Clitandre, however, can not even enforce against his wife Philaminte. You Chrysales Belise sister and her other daughter Armande are only interested in literature and philosophy and look pityingly on all uneducated, such as Chrysale, Henriette and Clitandre down. Also Armande tried Henriette connection with Clitandre to thwart, even if they had, as he formerly interested him up for it, dismissed.

To open conflict occurs when Philaminte the cook Martine because of their " illiteracy " announces. The couple got into an argument about it. Philaminte promises the Henriette of their esteemed poet Trissotin (about: Dreimaldümmling ), a parody of the preacher and poet Charles Cotin, a contemporary of Molière ( 1602-1684 ).

Ariste, the uncle Henriette finally saves the happiness of his niece. Before the notary, who has already been ordered to make out the marriage contract, he presented two fictitious letters that prove the financial ruin of the family. Trissotin then pulls his application on the grounds that Henriette do not love him. After Philaminte has realized that it is the mere esthete is a hypocrite, the only money the family has curly, she agrees to the marriage of her daughter with Clitandre generous.

In the comic minor character in the Vadius Molière has caricatured the older writers and scholars Gilles Ménage.
