Les Portes-en-Ré

Les Portes -en- Ré is a municipality with 637 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011), on the Ile de Ré on the French Atlantic coast. It is a village with a small port on the north coast of the Ile de Ré, opposite the coast of Vendée.

The municipality of Les Portes has some of the best beaches on the island. The shoreline on the north coast of the island, between Saint- Clément -des- Baleines and Portes, consists of a six kilometer long and several hundred meters wide beach, which is half owned by Les Portes. On the east coast, opposite the Vendée, lies about six kilometers long beach of Trousse chemise. A little further south, there is the beach of La patache. History

A legend tells how the name of the wood, La Chemise Trousse to have originated: in 1627 the French had driven under the leadership of Toiras the English under the Duke of Buckingham from the island.
