Lester L. Short

Lester Leroy Short ( * May 29, 1933 in Port Chester, NY) is an American ornithologist. His main research field is the order of Piciformes.

Life and work

1955 Short graduated Bachelor of Science from Cornell University. After studying zoology at Charles Sibley at Cornell University in 1959, he wrote his doctoral thesis entitled Hybridization in the Flickers ( Colaptes ) of North America. From 1960 to 1962 he was a visiting professor at Adelphi University. From 1963 to 1966 he worked for the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. From 1966 to 1997 he was curator of birds at the American Museum of Natural History. In this position, he undertook expeditions to South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific. In 1972, Short part in an expedition to explore the Okinawa woodpecker. Following the publication of the expedition results 1973 in Wilson Bulletin, the American public was made aware of the serious threat to nature and a planned construction of U.S. Navy facilities in the only habitat - the Yambaru forest in northern Okinawa - was questioned and ultimately prevents. 1986 and 1987 was one short of a team of Cuban and American ornithologists, who managed to watch the -lost - Cuba ivory woodpecker ( Campephilus principalis bairdii ) for a short time.
