Levens Hall

Levens Hall is an English country house on Kent in Cumbria, north of Morecambe Bay.

History

A document of 1170 shows that William of Lancaster Norman de Hieland ceded the land of Levens, but reserved the right to hunt and fish. It seems that the former took the name Redland, to which the name of the nearby Yealand Redmayne suggesting. A stone tower house with Pallas was built in the 13th century in Levens Hall for Matthias de Redman. 1393 Richard de Redman put on the site north of Levens Hall a wildlife park on. 1562 Allan Bellingham acquired the property, presumably with funds he had obtained in the Monastery dissolution under Henry VIII. The visible today buildings are largely of the 16th century, when the Bellingham extended the facility. Ceiling and panel work from this period have survived. The Bellingham sold the property in February 1689 for 24,400 pounds of Captain James Grahme ( Graham), the treasurer of James II from a family notorious robber barons. 1692 Graham had built the south wing and a brewery. 1833 belonged to the manor the Captain Fulke Greville - Howard.

Levens Hall is owned by the Bagot family since Josceline Bagot (1854 - 1913) inherited it from his childless great-aunt Mary Abbot.

Garden

1694-1712 put Guillaume Beaumont, the former head gardener of James II to the garden. He was also involved in the design of Hampton Court. The garden was divided into four sections, this plan has been preserved until today. Numerous trees and shrubs were geschneitelt and brought into artistic forms. He used mainly yews, of which 25 have survived until today. Two of the pruned trees are known as " king and queen " known, other than Elizabeth and her ladies in waiting. Then there are the " Judge Wig " and the Howard - lion. Most show simple geometric shapes such as cones or cubes. Today, new trees come in the form section to do so. The Künsterlin Julia Barton put 2001, eight " Phytoforme " to where metal stands are planted with succulents.

The garden is open to the public. Also Bagot goat and several steam engines can be seen. The Ha -Ha was filled to create a parking lot.
