Lewis Powell (conspirator)

Lewis Thornton Powell (also known as Lewis Paine or Payne, born April 22, 1844 in Randolph County, Alabama, † July 7, 1865 in Washington, DC) was an American co-conspirators of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.

On the evening of April 14, 1865 at the Booth Lincoln in the Ford Theatre in Washington shot, Powell broke into the house of the Secretary of State William H. Seward, injuring him seriously with multiple stab wounds. On April 17, Powell was arrested and identified by Seward's butler.

On July 7, 1865 Powell was hanged along with three other conspirators Mary Surratt, David Herold and George Atzerodt.
