Lex Papia Poppaea

Lex Iulia et Papia is the collective term for two Roman laws from the time of Augustus.

In the 18 adopted BC law lex Iulia de marit andis ordinibus Augustus ordered to increase the general morale and combat infertility that only civil marriages were allowed to just be closed. In 9 AD the lex Papia Poppaea was added, with a marriage has been compulsory for all Roman citizens of marriageable age. Who was unmarried, the right lost inheritances, childless couples are entitled to a half of an inheritance. Pairs, however, the children had been encouraged by privileges ( privilege children ius liberorum ). Furthermore you got with an abundance of children easier access to the offices.

It was no longer clear even in ancient times, which scheme to which of the two laws was, which is why you simply both lex Iulia et Papia laws ( Institutiones of Gaius ), or lex Iulia miscella (Codex Justinian ) summarized. Although Augustus already realized that the laws missed their target, they were only 531/534 repealed.
