Lexikon des Mittelalters

The lexicon of the Middle Ages (LMA, LexMA or similar) is a German-language reference work on the history and culture of the Middle Ages in 9 volumes. It was created by international writers and encompasses over 36,000 articles. Time ranges of the frame from late antiquity to about 1500, while also Byzantium and the Arab world are considered.

It is generally in medieval studies as indispensable, although the research state of the first volumes is partly revised. The work is usually cited as LexMA (or LMA), indicating the columns ( Sp ).

The partial deliveries of the bound original edition published since 1977. Volumes 1 (1980 ) -6 (1993 ) published in Artemis or Artemis & Winkler -Verlag Munich and Zurich, the volumes 7 (1995 ) to 9 ( 1998) in LexMA - Verlag, Munich. A register book was published in 1999.

The lexicon is also known as the study edition Metzler Verlag Stuttgart / Weimar 1999 ( ISBN 3-476-01742-7, license of Coron Verlag Schoeller, laugh at the lake) and 2002 in paperback by dtv (ISBN 3-423-59057-2 ) and 2000 as a CD -ROM and online version ( at Brepolis, the online offer of Brepols ) published.
