The Lhasa Apso is one of the FCI (No. 227, Gr. 9, sec 5) recognized breed from Tibet, whose stud book but is out in the UK.

Origin and History

The Lhasa Apso was bred by lamas in the monasteries in Tibet and was considered a " messenger of peace and happiness ." They called the dogs and lion dogs because of their lion- like fur, Lhasa Apsos were regarded as the reincarnation of lamas who had no access to the " oriental paradise of bliss ," it was "holy dogs" who guarded the treasures of the Buddha. The name Lhasa Apso is composed of the name of the Tibetan capital Lhasa ( " Place of the Gods" ) and the term Apso derived from Rapso what Tibetan means a kind of ragged - long-haired mountain goat.

1901 came the first specimens to England and in 1934 they got a breed standard, Breeding beginning in Germany was only in the 1970s.

Description

This self-confident, to 25 cm wide, very lively and cheerful, but often idiosyncratic dog is a good companion dog and is valued as a luxury dog. Long guard hair covered his body, heavy, straight, hard, not woolly or silky in gold, beige, honey, dark grizzle, slate, smoke gray, two-tone, black, white or brown, hanging hairy ears and a high set tail, good but not worn like a pot handle on the back, often at end of tail with a kink complete the overall picture.

Closely related is the Shih -Tzu, he is the Lhasa Apso is very similar, but slightly heavier and has a shorter nose. He is a Sino- Tibetan descent and was named after the Chinese word for " lion", Sheu - Tzeu called. The name "Lion Dog" also appears the Pekingese.
