The LHCf experiment ( for the Large Hadron Collider forward) is one which is conducted six experiments with the Large Hadron Collider at CERN.
The LHCf experiment is the smallest of the accommodated at the LHC experiments, it consists of two approximately 30x80x10 cm and about 40 kg detectors and is staffed by 22 scientists. It is expected that LHCf experiment, after about 100 days measuring time have collected sufficient data and dismantled afterwards.
Motivation
With the LHCf experiment experiences for the calibration of particle detectors to be collected. This particularly applies to models for Monte Carlo simulation of detectors to study the cosmic radiation as found, for example at the Pierre Auger Observatory for the highest energies beyond the GZK cutoff use.
Experimental Setup
The LHCf experiment consists of two calorimeters made of tungsten plates and plastic scintillators, which can be retracted 140 m from the ATLAS detector exactly between the two branch pipes of the LHC. The scintillator materials of LHCf detectors are not designed for high radiation resistance.
