Li Zongren

Li Zongren (Chinese李宗仁, Pinyin lǐ Zongren, W.-G. Li Tsung -jen; Zì德邻, Delin, Te -lin, born August 13, 1890 in Guilin, Guangxi, † January 13, 1969 in Nanjing ) was a Chinese warlord and President of the Republic of China.

Life

Li was born in the village Xixiang (西 乡村) to Guilin ( Guangxi Province ). His father Li Beiying (李培英) was a teacher; Li Zongren was the second oldest of five boys and three girls. In 1910, Li joined the Kuomintang precursor Tongmenghui.

Starting in 1925, Li was the leader of a group of warlords who ruled the province of Guangxi. The Guangxi army under Li and Bai Chongxi was one of the main supports for the Northern Expedition of the Kuomintang 1926-1928 Nevertheless, Li was not involved in the Nanjing government of Chiang Kai- shek. ; the relationship between Chiang and Li was always tense.

Between 1937 and 1945, Li participated in the Sino- Japanese War.

On April 28, 1948 Li was elected by the National Assembly of the Republic of China Vice President, after he had previously Chiang's protégé, Sun Fo off. As in January 1949 due to Chiang defeats formally resigned against the Communists as president, Li was even acting president, but without having any real power. Chiang continued to rule over his party apparatus and its relations with high officials in the army. In his capacity as President of the Republic of China Li tried to negotiate with the Communists, Chiang refused what; the rivalry between Chiang and Li was thus even greater.

In 1949, the Government of the Republic of China fled to Taiwan; Li flew to the U.S. to seek medical treatment. In his capacity as President of the Republic of China Li visited the U.S. President Truman and Chiang designated as a dictator and usurper. In the 1950s Li was relieved to Chiang operating its offices. From there sympathized Li with the communist leadership in Beijing; with the support of Zhou Enlai, he returned in 1965 in the People's Republic of China back.
