Liberal Party (Iceland)

The Liberal Party of Iceland, Icelandic Frjálslyndi flokkurinn, is a political party in Iceland. It is no longer represented in the Icelandic parliament Althingi since 2009.

Party

The party supports Iceland's membership in NATO. The Iraq war is rejected by the party. Furthermore, refused to Iceland's membership in the European Union. Focus of the party was for many years the fisheries policy and the Icelandic fishing quotas. In addition, the issue of immigration as a political issue is taken up by the party and it is required by their consequent restrictions on immigration.

The party was founded in 1998. 2006/2007 merged the small Icelandic party Nytt afl ( " New Force " ) to the party, whereupon the Liberal Member Margrét Sverrisdóttir left the Liberal Party of Iceland. Chairman of the party was 2003-2009 Guðjón Arnar Kristjánsson, vice chairman was Kolbrún Stefánsdóttir. In 2010 Sigurjón Þórðarson new chairman, vice- chairman is currently Ásta Hafberg.

In the 2003 elections the party could reach 7.38% and received four seats in Althing, which they were gaining two seats. In the parliamentary elections held in May 2007, the party won 7.3% and in turn received four seats in Althing. In the early parliamentary elections in May 2009, she failed at 2.2% at the 5 % threshold and is therefore no longer represented in the Althing.

The party was due to the twelve year reign of the Independence Party and the Progressive Party from 1995 to 2007 and the grand coalition of the Independence Party and the Social Democratic Party since 2007 in the opposition in parliament.

On March 18, 2012 was from the Liberal Party and the parties civil rights movement and Hreyfingin ( " Movement " ) the new party Dögun ( " Dawn " ) out.
