Liberato Pinto

Liberato Damiao Ribeiro Pinto ( born September 29, 1880September 4, 1949 ) was a Portuguese military and politician from the period of the First Republic. November 30, 1920 to March 2, 1921 he was Prime Minister of Portugal.

Ribeiro Pinto resigned in January 1915 in the Democratic Party, for which he was elected in 1919 for the first time in the Portuguese Parliament. From 1914 to 1922 he was also chief of staff of the Republican Guard ( Guarda Nacional Republicana ). This was an elite military unit whose officer ranks was provided solely by supporters of the Democrats, and the very limited stood therefore under the control of the government, at least if the government was not contested by the Democrats. The Republican Guard introduced in the late phase of the First Republic a decisive factor represents power, and his position at the top of the guard owed ​​Ribeiro Pinto also that he has been appointed with the support of his predecessor, Álvaro de Castro as head of government. These attacks created the atmosphere in which finally resulted in a coup attempt against the government of the Republican Guard Granjo on October 19, 1921 to the assassination of Prime Minister Granjo ( "Lisbon Blutnacht ").
