Lily Ross Taylor

Lily Ross Taylor ( born August 12, 1886 in Auburn ( Alabama), † November 18, 1969 in Bryn Mawr ( Pennsylvania)) was an American classical philologist and Althistorikerin.

Life

Lily Ross Taylor studied from 1902 to 1906 Roman History at the University of Wisconsin. In 1906 she began graduate studies at Bryn Mawr College / Pennsylvania, which she continued in 1909 and 1910 at the Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms- University of Bonn and at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome. She received her PhD in 1912 at Bryn Mawr College with the theme of The Cults of Ostia. This was followed by teaching positions at Vassar College and in Rome. From 1927 to 1952 Lily Ross Taylor had held the chair of Latin at Bryn Mawr College. In the years 1946 and 1947 she was Sather Professor at the University of California. After her retirement she received from 1952 to 1955 as a professor at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome. Lily Ross Taylor died in 1969 at the age of 83 years following a car accident.
