Lindos (Greek Λίνδος ( f sg ) ) is a municipality on the Greek Dodekanesinsel Rhodes. The municipality consists of two districts and three local communities, which together have about 8,000 inhabitants and occupy about one-eighth of the island surface. In Lindos there are the ruins of the eponymous ancient polis.

History

Lindos was founded around the 11th century BC by the Dorians on the east coast of the island of Rhodes. Because of findings on the Acropolis, it is now considered likely that the Greeks already settled in Mycenaean times at Lindos, and even the presence of Minoans is not excluded. However, the bloom began with the arrival of the Dorians.

The local situation was favorable, as it not only an easily defensible castle hill was, but also an excellent natural harbor, probably acquired early national significance. Lindos seems a center of early contacts between the Greek world and the Phoenicians to have been. The inhabitants built temples in honor of Athena, on the Acropolis of Lindos today, surrounded by the remains of the late medieval fort of St. John, and Heracles.

Together with Ialyssos Ialyssos and connected in constant competition, Lindos dominated for a long time the island until the three cities joined forces to BC to start at the northern tip of the polis Rhodes in the year 408. However, Lindos has not been abandoned, but remained inhabited. The temples were still being used and remained nationally significant. In the 3rd century AD circulated the legend, the sage Apollonius of Tyana had ascended to heaven in the sanctuary of Lindos.

Lindos is now a tourist attraction, especially in the high season usually overcrowded. The Acropolis can be hiked on a serpentine path, which can be very difficult in the midday heat. Addition, there are also " donkey - taxis " are available, which are available only in Lindos on Rhodes for tourists. The archaeological remains on the Acropolis are compared with other ancient sites, but overall rather unspectacular; the pillars around which serve as popular photo motif are not originals, but modern reconstructions. Among the other remains of the ancient city include a rock grave and numerous statue bases with some very high-quality inscriptions. The ancient theater located on the slope of the Acropolis is currently not publicly available.

Administrative divisions

Lindos made to the administrative reform in 2010 an independent municipality, and has since the status of a municipality. This is divided into two municipalities and three local communities.
