Line A (EuskoTran)

The tram Bilbao is operated by the Basque railway company EuskoTren under the name Euskotren Tranbia. On 27 May 1999, the work on the construction of the tram, which operates a line started. It is the successor of an old tram network, which was from 1876 to 1964.

History

The nearly 4.5 km long route was opened in 2002 as a supplement to the metro Bilbao. It runs in the city center along the estuary of the River Nervion and connects two metro stations and three stations with the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao. The road consists mainly of a grassed, separated from motorized individual track body; it is mostly double track, in the eastern third but only one lane.

The first tramway in Bilbao went already in 1876 due to the tram - hostile policy of the Spanish government after the Second World War, the network shrank more and more. ; the last line was discontinued in 1964. The trolleybuses, which had replaced the tram disappeared until 1978 also. But the rampant transport problems led to a rethink. On 18 December 2002 the first section of Euskotren Tranbia was put into operation. Since then, followed by three short extensions with a length of a few hundred meters.

Rolling stock

To operate the route three-part articulated railcar type Urbos were one of the Basque company CAF selected.
