Linköping Municipality

Linköping is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Östergötland County and the historic province of Östergötland. The capital of the province is Linköping.

With a population of about 137,000 people Linköping is the fifth largest municipality in Sweden.

Geography

The municipality of Linköping is centrally located within the province of Östergötland County. Adjacent communities are, from north to west, Finspång, Norrköping, Söderköping, Åtvidaberg, Kinda, Ydre Boxholm, Mjölby and Motala.

The largest lake in the municipality is the Roxen, which is located north of the city of Linköping.

Economy

In 2003, the population grew from Linköping more than any other Swedish community, and even today Linköping is one of the fastest-growing communities. The reason is a good development of the number of employees and low unemployment.

In 1937 the company moved its Saab aircraft production to Linköping. The telecommunications company Ericsson has a plant here.

Policy

At present, the municipality is governed by a coalition of the Social Democrats and the Centerpartiet. The highest office holds the Social Democrat Lena Micko. Linköping is one of the few Swedish municipalities who call the community leaders "mayor". Currently, the Social Democrat Eva Joelsson has held this position. The main opposition party is the Moderata samlingspartiet, which is led by Paul Lindvall.

Attractions

The most important attraction of the church is the cathedral of Linköping, which dates from the Middle Ages. Near the cathedral there is a castle. The town hall of Linkoping is located in the vicinity. By the lake Teden is the Ekenäs Castle. The monastery Vreta is now only preserved as a ruin, while the corresponding medieval church still completely stands today. About 18 km south of the city of Linköping is the castle Bjärka -Säby the outflow of Stångån from the Stora ranks. Near the place Malmslätt at the airfield Malmen is the Flygvapenmuseum, an aviation museum, which is mainly dedicated to the Swedish Air Force.
