Lionel Belmore

Lionel Belmore ( born May 12, 1867 in Wimbledon, London, † January 30, 1953 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles ) was a British film and stage actor and director.

Life

Lionel Belmore began his career in the theater, where he remained connected for over half a century. He emigrated to America and went from 1899 to 1916 in more than 25 on Broadway. In 1914 he made ​​his film debut with the short film Taken By Storm, the same year he made ​​his first film as a director. After 14 films to 1918 he ended his career as a director and then focused entirely on his career as a supporting actor. While he was often mentioned in the silent film uncredited, the quality of his roles declined in the sound film and Belmore was increasingly not mentioned in the credits. He entered the small but distinctive supporting roles in numerous classics of the 1930s, for example, Cavalcade, David Copperfield, Mutiny on the Bounty, Robin Hood, King of the Vagabonds, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Most embodied Lionel Belmore somewhat nervous or pitiful old men, so also in his most famous film appearance as the somewhat whiny mayor from the classic horror film Frankenstein.

1943 Lionel Belmore moved back to around 180 films from the film business, his last film, however, was not published until 1945. He died in 1953 at the age of 85 years. He was the brother of the actress Daisy Belmore.
