Zoo entrance

Founded in 1883 and opened in 1884 Jardim Zoológico de Lisboa, [ ʒɐrdɪ zowlɘʒiku də li'ʒboɐ ] to German Zoological Gardens of Lisbon, is one of the largest zoos in Portugal. Located in São Domingos de Benfica district zoological garden was the first park of its kind in the Iberian peninsula. He benefited initially from the relations with the Portuguese colonies and was able to build one of the most important and most variable herds of his time in a few years.

Opened in 1955 Dolphin Bay is one of the greatest attractions of the zoo. The local screenings take place against the backdrop of a fishing village and combine acrobatics of dolphins and sea lions with information about the character traits of these animals and their adaptation to the marine life.

Another attraction is the 1994 inaugurated cable car. In the open cabin baskets standing visitors can experience on a 20 -minute ride across the Zoo a unique view of the entire system.

The zoo has over 2,000 animals 332 different species, among which are 114 mammal species, 157 birds, 56 reptiles and five species of amphibians as well as a small collection of arthropods.
