Lizzie and Fritz is a comic opera in one act by Jacques Offenbach; The libretto was written by Paul Boisselot. The composer described this work as Conversation alsacienne. An adaptation of this acclaimed play was Leonhard carbon of Kohleneggs genre picture Fritzchen and Lizzie or Rheinland in Saxony, which he wrote in 1928 to the same music.

Action

The Alsatian Lizzie goes to Paris to earn as a broom seller money for herself and her old sick father. There she meets on the market Fritz, who also hails from Alsace. Fritz immediately falls in love Lizzie and I will absolutely take home to Alsace.

During a debate in which the two of them, their mutual love confess, they need to realize that they are brother and sister. Fritz went namely years ago when Lizzie was a little girl still, to Paris and had forgotten his sister. Even Lizzie could not remember their brother.

Since Fritz has thus indeed gained a sister, but also lost his beloved, he does not want to return home. Sadly, they want to take leave of each other, as noted Fritz at Lizzie a letter that has not even been opened. Lizzie can not read so she gives it to Fritz, to have it read aloud to him.

It is a letter from his father and in which he confesses to Lizzie that she was the illegitimate daughter of his sister and he therefore only the uncle.
